{"id":2601,"date":"2019-07-05T09:01:06","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T15:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newmexicoshootingsports.com\/shootingblog\/?p=2601"},"modified":"2019-07-05T09:01:06","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T15:01:06","slug":"walmart-to-stop-selling-guns-in-new-mexico-because-of-background-check-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newmexicoshootingsports.com\/shootingblog\/walmart-to-stop-selling-guns-in-new-mexico-because-of-background-check-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Walmart to Stop Selling Guns in New Mexico Because of Background Check Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DpoIBfYQWK0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Starting on July 22, 2019, Walmart will no longer sell firearms in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the retail giant told local media that the decision was in response to the July 1st rollout of the state\u2019s new universal background check law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike a specialty sporting goods retailer where customers expect to see firearms of various types being handled, Walmart customers do not generally expect to see individuals walking through the store potentially carrying multiple firearms, which can lead to confusion and potentially putting both our customers and associates at risk,\u201d Walmart spokeswoman Tiffany Wilson told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.koat.com\/article\/walmart-will-no-longer-sell-guns-in-new-mexico\/28266243\">KOAT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Signed into<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-mexico-passes-background-checks-sheriffs\/\">\u00a0law back in March<\/a>\u00a0by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/NM\/text\/SB8\/id\/1830903\" class=\"broken_link\">Firearm Sale Background Check<\/a>\u201d legislation requires background checks for private, person-to-person gun sales and transfers.<\/p>\n<p>While there are certain exemptions in the law for antique firearms and sales between family members, the majority of transfers, including those made over the Internet and at gun shows, must be done via a federal firearms licensee who is responsible for processing the background check on the prospective purchaser (or transferee).<\/p>\n<p>Anyone caught violating the law can be charged with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/codes.findlaw.com\/nm\/chapter-31-criminal-procedure\/nm-st-sect-31-19-1.html\" class=\"broken_link\">misdemeanor\u00a0<\/a>offense, which carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and\/or a $1,000 fine.
