This afternoon, the Senate Floor schedule was shifted around to put HB9, the bill that would impose criminal penalties on a gun owner if a third-party minor used their gun to commit a crime or hurt someone, at the top of the agenda. Senator Neville was able to win one good amendment on the bill, creating greater protections for gun owners involved youth hunting or youth shooting sports, but it remains a bill we are opposed to. Ultimately, it passed the Senate by a vote of 24-16 with one Democrat joining all Republicans opposing the bill. Since the bill was amended, it heads back to the Floor of the House for a concurrence vote.
On Sunday the 5th, both SB427 and SB428 will be heard in the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee in room 311 at 1:30pm (Zoom Link). SB427 is another version of a 14-day waiting period for firearm sales. Here is a pre-drafted email opposing SB427. SB428 is an attempt at circumventing federal law to allow lawsuits against gun manufacturers and FFLs for the criminal acts of third-parties. Here is a pre-drafted email opposing SB428.
Wd don’t have final confirmation yet, but it appears likely that HB101 will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee sometime next week, quite possibly Monday. The bill would ban the sale of semiautomatic rifles in New Mexico and require current owners to register them with the state.
